I can't resist posting this one, too.

Finn with the adopted neighborhood cat
This kitty belongs to a family one street away. But lately, she's been coming to visit a lot, which just thrills Finn. He usually doesn't get a chance to pet cats, as most run when they see a young boy barreling towards them. But this one even makes our dear Santos look standoffish in comparison—she nuzzles, purrs, follows you around, and gets right in your lap. She even lets Cormac pet her—an enormous leap of faith.
I really hope that both Finn and Cormac never lose this love of animals that they have. They really adore all animals and just light up when they see one. Finn is very nurturing—when we visited a farm, we met a three-legged cat who was also blind. Finn fed him by hand, left a trail of food to his water dish (so he could find it), and was just so kind of gentle with them. Cormac's first word was literally "dog-dog" and he still goes nuts whenever he sees one on the street, pointing, waving, and saying "awwwww."

splashing around with his best girl, Ruby
So, you can imagine how extremely thrilled these two were to get to play together yesterday. I mean, it had almost been a week! They went to see Toy Story and then splashed around in the kiddie pool in Ruby's backyard.
Finn was very upset to hear that some boys in his camp think girls are "yucky." He almost started to cry when he told me. He was like, "Mama, how could anyone think girls were yucky?" He's awfully young to lose faith in humanity, so I just told him that his friends may not have had the good fortune to meet girls as sweet as he has.

Boys will be...
There is a great article in this month's Esquire by A.J. Jacobs entitled "How to Raise Men." He has three kids under the age of six--all boys.
He writes:
If anyone thinks gender is purely social construct--as I once did--they should spend a couple of hours with my sons. It's like my boys read a book called The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fulfilling Male Stereotypes.
Let me go down the list:
* Fascinated by cars and transportation? Check. (They sit spellbound while I read books with phrases like 'and the boxcar shunts freight.')
* Obsessed with sports? Check. (My eldest son wanted to name his brothers Baseball and Basketball.)
* Fans of violence? Yes. (All roads lead to physical conflict, e.g. hugging turns into wrestling, which turns into eyeball clawing.)
* Intrigued by bodily functions? Check. (The first picture book my eldest son created was about a man who took a dump on the 43rd floor of the Empire State Building.)
* Love guns? Yes. (Despite my attempts at arms control--including renaming water guns water "squirters.")
* Loud? Beyond comprehension. (When I ask my son Zane to be quiet because his mom is napping, he'll walk by her room shouting "TIP-TOE! TIP-TOE!")
Amen to all of these. I thought Finn was a fluke, but Cormac is like a miniature John Belushi between his comical burps, full-body tackles, and pure volume. I have come to terms that I am outnumbered. But it is really OK. I will never have to play princesses.

what is in Finn's heart?
Finn has gotten really into making these little books. When he was home sick this month (and I was getting work done), he came up with the idea of making this book, called, "What is in My Heart?"
Inside, you'll see that this includes:
Mom
Dad
Mrs. Graves (his teacher)
Ruby (his girlfriend)
Santos (dog)
Kyle (friend from school)
Cormac
Auntie Julie
Cousin Anna
Grandmas
Grandpa
Mr. Louridas (another teacher)
Bella (neighbor dog)
If you didn't make the list, don't despair. He had to stop when it was lunchtime.

hotties
I seriously can not keep these two out of the sprinkler. Cormac absolutely LOVES it. He sits right on the sprinkler. Speaking of things he loves, he's pretty OK with popsicles, too, although he ends up pretty sticky.

A Burger King if there ever was one
Our nanny spoils Cormac--here he is at Burger King, where he earns his coronation by eating as much as the adults. And yes, he's totally wearing a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band T-shirt, courtesy of New Jersey's honorary Auntie Keeks.
