Jack and the Beanstalk
Finn's class put on a short play of Jack and the Beanstalk, and they totally blew me away. There was not one kid crying up there, or not giving it everything they've got. Rather, they were belting out the songs, smiling, and having fun.
Super proud of Finn, who was the narrator, with his friend, Lyan. He even memorized some of his lines and used a microphone!

quotable finn
Cormac's been getting all the press the last month. Here are a couple of Finn's gems.
When his teacher told him that she was standing up as a bridesmaid in her cousin's wedding, he asked me if this meant that she was "one of the choices."
He wants to enter a LEGO contest where you make your favorite food out of LEGOs, photograph it, and send it in. But he doesn't know how to make a Meximelt out of LEGOs.
He was very proud of killing his first pesky fly and wants to tell his Uncle Mike (who works in pest control) all about it.

could he seriously be any more of a ham?
One of Cormac's preschool teachers took these photos of him at school on Monday. She told me that as soon as she brought out her camera, he started following her around, saying "cheese!" and posing for, like, five minutes. He knows! He knows how darn cute he is!
This pretty much perfectly captures Cormac's personality.

The Potty Train
Finn was so excited by his first trip on the train, that he forgot all about the fact that he had to go pee the minute we got to the station. In fact, we'd made it all the way downtown and through the ticket line for the Sears Tower before he remembered he had to go. Look at me--I'm beaming at my son's bladder control. Anyways, we had quite an adventure. Bedtime story fodder for the week.
(The very last shot is my favorite.)

Big Boy Undies!
It's long overdue! You really have to commit--since it's gonna be messy for a couple days--and we finally have a solid weekend to devote to this big transition. Finn's very excited and so far doing very well about asking to go. He picked the soccer underwear, by the way. I thought sure the dinosaurs would be his pick, but he's his own man now...

The First Beach Day of '08!
Finn and Daddy took advantage of a cloudless Sunday to hightail it out to the beach. While Gramma sends us reports of snow from Seattle (!), we set out for a day of sand castles and rock skipping. Followed by some frolicking in the lakeside park and a trip to "Old" McDonald's for lunch.
A perfect day!

Finn's First Visit to the Pros
Though I thought I was doing a bang-up job as Finn's stylist, Mommy felt differently. The ragamuffin look is in, I tell her, but she won't listen. So, now he's gonna look all respectable.
In order to ease any anxiety, I got my hair cut first. He thought it looked pretty entertaining, and got started with a different Supercutter before I was even done. Once I was good and respectable-looking, I snapped a few pictures of an extremely well-behaved little guy with a couple of hair technicians tag-teaming him.
In addition to the balloon and the sucker they gave him, he was rewarded with a trip to Jeff's Red Hots for a hot dog--NO MUSTARD!

bubbles
There's a scene in Knocked Up where Paul Rudd and the guy who looks like he could be Shawn's slacker stoner brother are sitting on a park bench, watching kids blow bubbles. They marvel at how beautiful it is that kids can find such joy in something as simple as bubbles. Although I don't think they actually said "beautiful," rather something with a lot more profanity.
I remember this with such clarity not just because it was the first movie we had seen in a theater in darn near six months, but because I can relate--kind of. When we first introduced Finn to bubbles, he was full of wonder and awe at these perfect, weightless spheres that seemed to emerge out of nothing. But, like all American children, the child grew jaded and wanted more. More bubbles, bigger bubbles, and more bubble horsepower. A simple wand and cup from Walgreens just wouldn't cut it anymore.
So we got him this super-charged bubble blaster. The packaging promises "up to 1000 bubbles a minute!!!" (The exclamation points are theirs, not mind.) And boy, does it ever deliver. Here's Finn exploring the all-American joy of up to 1000 bubbles per minute.
* As a funny aside, Finn got so excited that he put the bubble blaster in his mouth. When he tasted the soap, he started to cry, and big bubbles started coming out of his mouth.

Finn's First Easter Egg Hunt
I was so excited about Finn's first Easter Egg hunt. It's a neighborhood event, held at the park down the street. Literally all his peeps (pun intended) were there, including his girlfriend Ella, his buddy Evan, and big boy friend, Nate. He was dazzled by all the kids, the different colored eggs, and the whiff of competition in the air.
But it was freezing. So cold that the entire event lasted barely ten minutes. We're talking 30 degrees with high winds. We ended up leaving, with many other parents, carrying a cold, screaming baby.
You win this round, Chicago. I appreciate the fact that the world's best cities exact some sort of price from their inhabitants and I know yours is tolerating lousy weather. But enough is enough. It's April already. The Easter Bunny was the warmest person at that darn egg hunt, and it was because she was wearing a ridiculously large costume. Those people are supposed to be miserable, not envyingly cozy. Here's hoping you warm up soon, Chicago. I can't keep this baby and dog couped up inside much longer.
Here are the rest of the photos Shawn managed to capture in that ten minutes or so. It really would seem we had been there much longer.

Sketch your portrait?
Here's Finn with one of his favorite Christmas presents--a chalkboard on a little case that carries art materials. (A gift from Uncle Clintie and Aunt Sudi.) He just loves this. One of the first things he says when he gets up in the morning these days is "gaak! gaak!" which is Finnspeak for "chalk." Once reunited with his beloved toy, he starts drawing, erasing, and putting the gaak back in the case, to which he declares "all gone!" He kind of reminds me of those guys who site down at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and offer to draw your caricature for a fee.
Finn would like to wish all a very happy Martin Luther King Day. He recommends listening to this recording of King's Mountaintop speech in commemoration.

Walkin', yes indeed.
Here's Finn traipsing back and forth across the sunroom. He's only recently (as in the last coupla days) gotten good enough to start and stop and stay standing, though at the end of this trip, he does hit the deck. There are actually two favorites on display here: his new favorite pasttime--walking, and his new favorite toy--pens, which you can see he's clutching the whole time...

Here are photos from Finn's first birthday party. Consider it a given that the boy loooooovvved his first taste of cake. (Amy Sedaris' cupcake recipe, by the way.) It was a rainy day here, and the kids, hopped up on cupcakes and snacks were positively pumped. Finn piled right in with all of them. It looked like a decadent toy explosion in here. Luckily, there was beer for the parents. See all the photos here.

One of these days, I will be able to capture a photo of Finn smiling. Right before this was taken, he had the most adorable grin, with his two bottom teeth sticking out. His eyes were squinting and his cheeks were absolutely bulging with glee. But as soon as I pull out my camera, he lunges for it. My theory is that he wants to teach me what it's like to have a camera in your face all the time.

Unfortunately, due to technical difficulities, I can't export the movie to the site. Poor Finn had his first real bout with sickness this weekend. Although he seemed fine early Sunday, by lunch, he was barfing all over the place. And I do mean ALL over the place. Poor guy just snuggled with us on the couch and watched TV in his jammies. (The best known treatment for the flu.) But today, he was feeling much better, rousing us with his own version of reveille early this morning, demanding milk. This belly's back in business.

cookie monster
Finn has discovered that one of the advantages of teeth is that they can be used to eat even more things, like this here cookie. Here, he test drives that new tooth with new vigor.
Many changes since we last faithfully blogged. Beyond the obvious geographic change, there are:
* Finn's new teeth
* Finn's wailing about the new teeth
* Finn waking up in the middle of the night to scream and alert the world to his new teeth
* A possible crush on his adorable babysitter (the only one who could distract him from the teeth)
It's back to work for me, but more soon!

the cutest little tax deduction you ever did see
I really have NO time to be uploading photos right now, what with the packing and the packing and the packing. But when Finn stubbornly refused to take his nap today, I got him up to play for a bit and posed him for this very adorable photo. Those eyes! Those cheeks! Here on tax day, we would like to proclaim that we would be enamored even without the dependant child tax deduction.
Back to packing, which has become my workout routine. I've been feeling a bit more like a post-pregnancy Britney than Denise, so I could use the exercise.

Imagine the conundrum if you're Finn. Your mom's from Pittsburgh, and your dad's from Seattle. Who do you root for in the Super Bowl? I mean, imagine the fireworks flying while watching the game!Well, that might be the case if your parents actually knew their relative teams were going to be in the Super Bowl before a week ago. here's the happy guy
I feel that I have been misrepresenting the little one lately by only chronicling his fussiest moments. While Finn can certainly throw a fit when he wants to, he's also brimming with delightfully happy squeals, giggles, and smiles much of the time. He even has his daddy trained to do a ridiculous dance and me to sing silly songs, which are rewarded with a fit of giggles each time. He has us both wrapped around his slobbery little fingers. (P.S. He may not like eating his rice cereal, but he is gnawing on everything else he can get his slobbery little mitts on these days. Here he is biting the head of his chicken toy, Ozzy style. first attempt at solid food
We finally got the green light to give Finn solid food (starting with rice cereal), and I was so excited. I thought after a lifetime of milk, he might have a taste for something a little different, not to mention more substantial. You can see from this photo that it wasn't quite the reception I anticipated. After a few more attempts ("rrrrr--here comes the airplaine!") and lots of cereal spit all over the place, the boy put his proverbial foot down on the rice cereal issue and the dinner hour came to a rather abrupt end. Better luck next time.Posted by lisa at 12:24 PM | Comments (0)

ground control to major finn...
There must be a rule somewhere that the uglier the baby toy, the more the kid loves it. This exersaucer is a total eyesore, but the boy loves it. Check out the peepers on this kid. I'm really hoping they stay this blue. It has been crazy warm here the past week--this is us leaving to take Santos for an afternoon walk.In other Finn news, I'm happy to announce that the boy slept for seven straight hours for the first time Friday night. (From 6pm to 1am, to be exact.) Upon waking, he chugged down a bottle and went back to sleep for another three and a half hours. This is major news, as sleeping has not been one of Finn's strong suits, to put it lightly. This has been tough for us to understand since if there was such a thing as sleeping touraments, Shawn and I would be a serious contenders. Here's hoping for another long stretch and a possible sleeping medal in this kid's future.

You can call him "Finn"...
I am so happy to announce the birth of our beautiful baby boy, FinianLucas Hazen. He was born Thursday, September 8, at 9:31 am, measuring 21
inches and weighing in at (no kidding!) 9 lbs., 1oz. It is a miracle the
boy wasn't named after the anesthesiologist.
He's the cutest little burrito--lots of fuzzy lt. brown hair, chubby
cheeks, and a very curious, intense stare. He aced his Apgar test (I
don't like to brag, but it was a "9.") And is sleeping like a burrito
right now next to me.
