We went to visit Grandpa and Grandma in Pittsburgh this weekend, and the boys had a blast. They rode bikes, went to the aviary, and splashed in the pool. Here are the photos from right before we left—pick your fave. They make a great series.

Kalamazoo Visit (last October)

Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

I just got these photos from my Dad--last October, we went up to Kalamazoo to visit him, my grandparents, and my aunt's family. It's so great to have the boys spend time with my grandparents, whom I so fondly remember visiting when I was a kid.

We spent the entire afternoon at their apartment. At one point, my grandpa got a call. He said, "I'm going to have to call you back, because there is something very special happening right now. There are grandchildren--and great grandchildren here! In fact, they're all over the floor."

Last weekend, we went to Cleveland for my 20-year high school reunion. (I know! I know!) While Mommy and Daddy were at the festivities, Nana got to spend some great quality time with the boys, playing, watching movies, eating pizza. Here they are before we left.

houston 2009

Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

Boy, did I ever do a bad job of documenting our great trip to Houston! It was a wonderful time at Uncle Clintie and Aunt Sudi's, with Nana visiting, too. My favorite part was Finn and Anna together. They clicked from the first moment. Literally, they would get up in the morning and spend every moment together until bed. The best quote is when a smitten Finn said, "Anna, I love you!" She paused, and then politely said, "Thank you very much." (Later, she told him she loved him, too.)

Hopefully, better photos coming soon from Uncle Clintie!

crazy on cupcakes

On Sunday, Katie and Omar had our neighborhood friends over for margaritas (the parents) and juice (the kiddies), and some other good eats. It was a very rainy, cold Saturday afternoon, and believe me, when Finn got up from his nap, you didn't have to ask me twice for an opportunity to get together with friends.

When Finn arrived, his first stop was at the food table. Finn demonstrated his love for all things edible by devouring: guacamole, chips, hot dogs, strawberries, crackers, cookies, and then a chocolate cupcake. These magical chocolate cupcakes that Lisa brought seemed to unleash the silly in all of the kids, as evidenced by these shots. Here are all the two/three year olds piled into a chair as I tried to pose them for a photo.

snow day

We got darn near a foot of snow Thursday night, so Friday a bunch of the neighborhood kids gathered at Delilah's house. These photos are deceiving in that you would think we spent the whole afternoon playing in the snow. In reality, Finn got cold after about 10 minutes and headed back inside. It was funny to see him in the snow--it was so deep that it looked like someone had planted him in the ground to the waist.

we'd all like to flee to The Cleve

Although, as I previously reported, I did not get any photos of Finn with his Nana in Cleveland last weekend, I gratefully did get some of my college gals. Our visit worked well, as Mom had to work Friday and Katy, Herbster, and Tara all have playgroup at Katy's that day. Finn inserted himself cautiously into the unfamiliar chaos that was the Bay Village playgroup. Make no mistake--he's well familiar with playgroup chaos. But he was a little shy around the new cast of characters.

It was delightful to visit with these old friends and get to meet their great kids. And who could pass up an opportunity to flee to The Cleve?

the Madisons come to Chicago

This weekend, Matt and Margot were in town with their entire mini-tribe. You may know Matt from his fine line of gelato, Madisono. Or maybe you know Margot from her exclusive line of paper products like notecards, stationery, notepads, and more, Margot Madison Stationery. Or maybe you just remember them from my Cincinnati days. Or not at all.

Anyway, Matt was in town for some sort of food producers conference, so they brought the whole family--including Julia, Natalie, and Oliver--to Chicago for the weekend. It was so fun to see them, especially the kids. I hadn't seen Julia since she was not yet two (she's now seven) and I had never met Natalie and Oliver. They all came over for pizza on Friday. And then Saturday, Margot and I took all the kids to the zoo.

Finn really loved his Cincinnati pals. He and Oliver played so well together Friday night, with Finn constantly running up to us saying, "He share this with me!" when Oliver would give him one of his own toys. (That's a daycare kid for you.) And Saturday at the zoo, when Finn would get fussy and not want to follow the group, he let both Julia and Natalie take him by the hand and lead him with the group.

Let it be said that Finn loves girls. His two best friends are girls (Delilah and Ella). And when Julia and Natalie took his hand, he got all blushy and shy. Just look at him in this photo--he can't take his eyes off the girls! On the car ride home, he asked me to tell him stories about Julia and him going to the park. (An honor reserved for only his favorite friends.)

auntie kimbers visits

This weekend, Shawn was in San Francisco for a guy's weekend. It was due to be a gorgeous Fall weekend here, so I invited my friend, Kimberly (aka, Kimberly the Sexy Artist), to visit from Cincinnati. I literally had not seen Kimberly in something like five years, so it was delightful to catch up with her.

Finn was a little out of sorts with Daddy was gone for the weekend and the fact he had to share my attention with "Auntie Kimbers." So, there were some pretty obvious pleas for attention. (Read: tantrums.) But he did enjoy visiting with Kimberly, too, as evidenced from these photos taken at Millennium Park.

more pumpkins

Since Finn has been so enthusiastic about Halloween, we have been going absolutely nuts with the Halloweenie-ness around here. Two weeks ago, we went to the pumpkin patch, last week was a Chicago festival. This weekend, we carved pumpkins, went to a Chicago Halloween party sponsored by Cookie magazine, decorated the house, and went to the annual neighborhood Halloween party.

These photos are from the latter. Finn was so into it. First of all, there was face-painting, which he thinks is just about the best thing ever. He opted to become an orange-haired kitty cat. There were also games, cookies, cider, and fake tattoos. And all this awesomeness was held at the neighborhood park and all his friends were there. The proverbial package. The event kind of collapsed into utter chaos two hours into it, as all the kids, tweaked out on sugar, were running absolutely wild. But I guarantee they all (like Finn) slept really well that night.

courtney and jonathan's wedding

This weekend, I traveled to California, solo, for my dear friends, Courtney and Jonathan's wedding. This was the first time I had been back to California since we moved, and this trip was extra-special because so many of my favorite people were going to be at the wedding.

The wedding itself was held at Jonathan's family's home. Court mentioned that they had a house on the ocean in Carmel. What she neglected to mention was that it was a sprawling mansion/estate with beach access. I absolutely could not believe it. My experiences with such homes is exclusive to reruns of The O.C. and Dynasty, for that matter. I celebrated like Alexis Carrington, enjoying the ocean views, downing tuna tartare, and sipping Chardonnay.

It was an absolutely beautiful day. The weather was auspiciously perfect, the ceremony was touching and meaningful, and it was delightful to see old friends. That night, H, John, Fiona, and I stayed overnight in a national park.

I managed to squeeze in some friend time in San Francisco, catching up with Brenda, Alicia, a glimpse of Sarah and Phoebe, and the old Chronicle crew. I also got to meet some of my San Francisco clients.

I took the red eye home on Monday night/Tuesday morning. I did miss my boys, but the thought of toting Finn on a four-hour flight, then a two and a half hour car ride, only to turn around and do it again the next day sounded unusually cruel. And Finn probably wouldn't like it too much, either.

I felt a little like Chicago's answer to Britney. Daddy had to repeat for four days, "Don't worry Sean Preston Finn. Mommy is out playing with her friends at a mansion and drinking wine. She'll be home soon, promise." Although Finn did fine in my absence, he seemed pretty ticked off at me when I returned home. He expressed by throwing toys around and giving such a tantrum that daycare called me to come pick him up. (A first, by the way.) But Mommy's home and all is right in the world again.

Margot and Matt visit

We were so thrilled to have Margot and Matt in town from Cincinnati this weekend. Margs is my best friend from Cincinnati, a gifted designer, talented businesswoman, and current client. (Margot's interactive stationery site is coming this Fall!) Matt is her awesome husband, a one-time mushroom farmer, and current gelato entrepreneur. (He has his own line and is catering to restaurants in Cincinnati.)

It was great to spend so much time with them and introduce them to Finn. We went to the farmer's market Saturday morning (of course!), then to Lincoln Park Zoo. Then they came by our house Saturday night and all of us grown-ups went out to dinner in Bucktown that night.

Finn loved his Auntie Margs and Uncle Matt. It's such a treat that they're closeby now. And Margs will be back when I can score some Oprah tickets!

BOYS! turn three

We are lucky to have the most adorable boy twins next door. When we moved in a year ago, they seemed like they were so much older than Finn. He was barely crawling at the time, and they were big two-year-olds, running and playing and keeping their parents busy chasing after them.

A year later, Finn can almost keep up with these two. He's so smitten with him a lot of his dialogue involves talking about the boys next door. Since it's hard to tell Dominick and Kellen apart, he just refers to them collectively as "BOYS!" (Yes, how he says it is best represented in all-caps, and with an exclamation point.) Every time we go outside, he yells over the fence, "HI BOYS!" And I do mean every time.

Finn rarely deems one greeting enough for BOYS. His salutation usually starts a ping-pong of greetings over the fence. BOYS! reply immediately, "Hi, Lisa! Hi, Finn!" And then it starts. "Hi BOYS! Hi, BOYS' mama!" And they reply. This can go on excess of 20 minutes.

Here are BOYS! celebrating their third birthday last month.

Grandparents Aplenty

This weekend, Finn and I drove up to Kalamazoo to visit with his grandparents, and great-grandparents, plus his great aunt, uncle and cousin, too. All that family meant that he was seriously the center of attention, which he loved. He barely stopped moving the entire visit, fluttering around from person to person, single-handedly childproofing his new environment (a handmade, irreplaceable vase? try irresistible!) and charming the family with his wit and brilliance. This was one audience I could not bore with my pride and affection for this little guy.

Moms Gone Wild

Last weekend, nine of my college friends gathered for a reunion in Hilton Head, South Carolina. This was the spot of two bacchanalian college Spring Breaks, so it was particuarly interesting to return as wives and moms, now in our mid-thirties (or "racing towards 40" as Sara said). Some of these friends I hadn't seen since they were shaking it to "Bootylicious" at our wedding.

It took all of about 30 seconds to return to the pace and banter we enjoyed as college students. If you closed your eyes, you might think that we weren't in Lisa's parents' palatial home, which they graciously lent us for the weekend (thanks, Fred and Sandy!), but rather back in our dilapidated Athens, Ohio rental, circa 1992. The noise level was at eleven most of the weekend, and that's just the way we like it. We're so lucky to have this wonderful group of women to continue to grow up and old with.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to send out mad love to Daddy Shawn who took Finn solo for the second time this month so I could get away for this reunion. When I returned home, there was evidence of a great bonding boys' time--A B Cs written in sidewalk chalk outside, balls littering the backyard, and lots of delicious wrappers in the garbage. While I had a great time with my girls, it's even better to return home to my boys!

Crochet--To Go!

leeshie.jpg
My beautiful and talented friend, Alicia Bergin, just had her book pub. It's called The Crochet To Go Deck and it includes patterns for 25 different crochet projects in a deck format. This girl is seriously talented—you can preview some of her designs on her crochet blog. When he was first born, Finn was the lucky recipient of a gorgeous handmade sleepsack at her talented hands. Whether you already crochet or are looking to pick it up, definitely check out Leesh's deck!

Visiting the grandparents in Pittsburgh

Last weekend, we went to Pittsburgh to visit Grandma and Grandpa Baggerman. From the moment he got there, Finn made himself right at home. He was walking, talking, and chasing the dog everywhere. We went to the aviary and the museum, but it was the meals that Finn (predictably) really liked best. To see all the photos from the weekend, click here.

Big boy birthday party

Max Wilkins turned three this weekend (shown here sitting next to Finn), which meant that Finn got to attend his first big boy birthday party. It was held at a place in Roscoe Village called "Musical Magic", where a woman sings with them, the kids run around and dance, play musical instruments, and generally go nuts.

Finn spent most of the time with this look on his face:

I mean, dancing? Singing? Jumping around and playing maracas (which he cried when he had to part with). Followed by pizza, ice cream and cake? He seriously thought it was heaven. He had this look on his face that suggested he had never seen such a bacchanalian celebration. He was stunned that life could be so grand. Exhibit number two:

His sugar high kicked in on the way home when he started batting around his balloon (balloons! even better!) in the backseat of the car and squealing at top pitch.

Blue-eyed babies times two

We were so delighted to have Heather and Fiona visiting last week. The last time we saw H and Fiona was the week before we moved to Chicago. While Shawn drove cross-country, Finn and I shacked up in the Gray/Williams backyard cottage. That was seven months ago and Finn was just rolling around and Fiona was a floppy newborn. There were some tears when a well-meaning Finn showed off for Fiona by rolling, rolling, rolling, nearly steamrolling Fiona as she lie innocently on a blanket.

What a difference a few months make! Now the steamrolling advantage is evenly matched. Fiona has grown into a gorgeous SuperBaby™, matching Finn step for step and toy for toy. It was great to see these two playing so sweetly together and toddling around the playroom. It will be fun to show them these photos when they're all grown up and married some day.

But it was also wonderful to see Heather. Ain't nothing like an H in the house--I loved just catching up with her, watching her as a mom, and just soaking up all the H-ness. I tried to sell her on a move to Chicago, which was only aided by our (relatively) cheaper real estate and 47 degree temperatures in January. (Frigid Chicago winters? Myth.) We might as well live closeby, as we will be in-laws some day.

Katie, Wendell and Estelle visit...

We were delighted to visit with our dear friends--the LeGardeurs--this weekend. We hadn't seen them since our wedding. (If you were at our wedding, you probably danced with Wendell--and he probably invited you to visit them in New Orleans. He totally meant it. Katie was the tall, cool one in the amazing dress.) They bravely faced the 20-degree weather and even got a rare flight in after our huge snowstorm. We got to meet baby Estelle, who is adorable and charming and destined to inherit those Dodson getaway sticks. (She hit the genetic lottery.)

Finn really took to Estelle, when the opportunity presented itself. He's no dummy--he wants to be riding on that float with Estelle when she's Mardi Gras Queen!

To the Effin' Class of 89

Last week was great, because on of my favorite friends in the world—Ann Garibaldi was in town visiting for an entire week. Really, not since we all went to Hawaii years ago have Amy, Ann, and I had such great one-on-one time.

We went away to a spa about 90 miles south of Chicago. Well, it actually turned out to be less of a spa than a fat camp. Actually, kind of a fat camp meets elder hostel. People, let this be a lesson to you. When the Web site looks suspicious, heed that as a warning. We were the youngest people there by a good 25 years, and it was a little too country even for Ann, who lived in Alaska for 13 years, for heaven's sake. Luckily, we smuggled in wine (alcohol and junk food are strictly prohibited) and sat up late chatting in their room. If only we could have ordered a pizza.

We also had a great night out in Chicago where we ate our weight in pasta at Terra Gusta and a fun night at Amy and Steve's where even Aim's college-aged cousins hung out with us all night. I can't tell you how great it was to see Annie, and for the Amy/Ann/Lisa trio to be reunited. I literally talked so much when we were together that my throat hurt.

And because you know there was one, here is the gratuitous slack-jaw photo from the evening. (Featuring Bob in the Rocky River mashup, too!)

We were very happy to host Finn's Pittsburgh grandparents this weekend. He kept us all hopping and was quite the charmer, climbing right into their laps and sharing toys. One discovery is that, despite the fact that Finn looks all Hazen to most people, he really looks a lot like Grandpa Pete. Here's exhibit A. (above) They even have the same look on their faces.

And here's exhibit B. Same mischevous smile!

We miss our Oakland pals, but are so very happy that there are more deGuzmen in this world. Mama, Daddy, Big Sister, and Baby are all doing well. So well that you have to wonder where Meg gets off looking so great here after just giving birth.

Welcome, Sweet Vivian!

Finn urges your support

One of my favorite new friends that I've met here in Chicago is my friend, Lisa Jones. I met her through dear college friend, Lees, (I know, I know Lisa x 3! I advise you to always carry a spare Lisa if you can.). I can't imagine settling here in Chicago without this new Lisa right down the street. She helped us find our awesome house in a great neighborhood, the perfect daycare, and even helped launch the soon-to-be popular Old Irving moms' Friday happy hour series. She is also the mom to Emma, whom Finn adores. I just know, years from now, when Emma's no longer his daycare friend, but the bombshell down the street, he will reference that very photo and say, "You know, Emma Jones used to be sweet on me."

But anyway, Lisa has had a very tough year. She lost her mother to lung cancer, then was diagnosed with breast cancer. She's gone through months of chemo and radiation treatment. And if that isn't tough enough, she did it while working four days a week and taking care of a toddler.

Instead of being angry at the world and retreating under the covers, Lisa did a wonderful thing. She organized Chicago's Lung Run, an event raising money for lung cancer research. Please support this wonderful cause by donating online. I know that there are hundreds of people out there reading this blog every week--I see you in the Web stats. Don't make me come after you, you lovely but anonymous people from places like Knology Holdings and Target--I see you coming each week! If you could find the heart to make a contribution to this worthy cause, you may help stop families like Lisa's from having to go through the pain she has gone through this past year.

And, I have to say, Lisa is the perfect inspiration for this event. The third day after we moved in, Lisa was at our door with a homemade cake and a bottle of wine. She was in the midst of chemo at the time and we were still sleeping on the floor with all of our stuff here. When I told College Friend Lees about this, she said, "Yeah, I'm just surprised you didn't find her out there mowing your lawn, too." I'm telling you folks, this is one Grade A Lisa.

Welcome Sydney Abney!

It's been a while since we've had a baby announcement here at Babymania. But I'm pleased to report that my dear friends Amy Bushyeager and George Abney welcomed their baby boy, Sydney, on August 20th. Everyone is healthy and happy, especially Bush who was on bedrest for two weeks prior. I waited to post his photo along with this, but when I told her to send me one Bush said, (and I quote) "What, like I have time to take photos an email them to you? I've got a newborn and a toddler. One thing I definitely won't be doing is posting it on any kind of blog."

Point taken. So dear readers, you will have to wait for boy Abney's baby photo. But you just know he's going to be sassy, too.

Mom's Happy Hour/Playgroup

Friday, I hosted a neighborhood mom's happy hour where we weary mamas could enjoy a much-needed glass of wine while the kids played. As Katie said, "I was counting down the hours to 4pm all day." Anyway, here are some photos from the afternoon.

Nana with Finn

Nana came to visit from Cleveland last weekend. Finn took to her immediately, reaching out to her, giving smiles, and babbling away. He even showed off my not only crawling for the first time, but giving kisses and sleeping in past 5:30am. for the first time in months. He loved her even more when she gave him a bite of her waffle at breakfast. I think he knows that already that grandmas are made to spoil their grandbabies.

Welcome, Grace Kathryn Weir!

This post is belated due to the fact that I have not had Internet access on my laptop for nearly three weeks. (The horror!) Without further ado, meet Grace Kathryn, born to Amy and Steve (although I understand Amy did most of the work) April 21st. A wee one, she was a dainty 6lbs. 13oz. at birth.
We met last week in person and she is just lovely, with a shock of fuzzy black hair and a gorgeous, peaceful face. Since Amy is my unofficial sister, that makes Grace Finn's unofficial cousin. Which means she will not be one of Finn's many prom dates.

Nope, that's just foxy Auntie Barb, who, with Uncle Eric, was in town for a visit last month from Portland (Spring Breeeeeaaaakkk!). They got to meet Finn for the first time. He woke up long enough to show off those chubby cheeks and test drive a few more laps. We wish they could have stayed longer!

It has been so lovely to see our little ones grow from tiny little sleeping/eating machines (mine the latter) into some real personalities. I'll miss our weekly gatherings. From left: Frieda, Laura, Sascha, Kristen, Yelena, Abbie, me, Megan, Gloria, and Jacqueline.

welcome, estelle legardeur!

Give a big, huge Babymania welcome to the newest arrival--Estelle LeGardeur! Born to Katie and Wendell, this is one little girl who won't be going to the prom with Finn. She's from New Orleans, y'all! He'll escort her to the ball when she's crowned Mardi Gras queen.

I think I speak for new moms everywhere when I say Katie looks wayyyy hotter than she should for just having had a baby. I ask, where are the under-eye circles? The bedhead? The sleep-deprived zombie stare?

storytime with Auntie Ren

Auntie Brenda came over to spend some time with Finn yesterday, and as you can see here, he may even like her better than Santos.

Happy last day of work, Daddy!

Today is Shawn's last day at Apple. In honor of the occasion, Finn has donned his technically illegal iPoop onesie, designed by mama. CafePress halted production on this design too. (Hello? It's called satire.) So unfortunately this is one of a very limited run of two--Fiona Williams gets the other.

Bathtime for Anna

First Bath
Originally uploaded by lisabagg.
I picked this photo up from Cousin Anna's blog. Look how blissed out Anna is when she gets her first bath. Finn was a little more peturbed by the whole process, as I remember.

Fiona, you is my woman now

finn_fee.jpgToday, Finn met his future first love, Fiona Gray Williams. And he fell for her right off the bat--look at how he just grabbed her and tried to pull her over. Way to play it coy, boy.

Finn Hazen, future rocket scientist?

Originally uploaded by lisabagg.
Here's Uncle Clintie at "zero Gs" as they say at NASA, helping conduct an experiment on the plane they call the "vomit comet." Despite the fact that he's a rocket scientist, the last time Clint was on this plane, he ate a bacon double cheeseburger shortly before. Suffice to say, he didn't make that mistake twice.

Maybe Finn will inherit whatever scientific/mathematical genes that made Clint a rocket scientist but not the ones that prevent me from being able to calculate a tip from a restaurant check. Who knows what the future holds? Maybe by the time Finn grows up, everyone will be an astronaut or something. Maybe I should ask Clintie.

We're so excited to get to know Fiona!

happy birthday, Phoebe!

A year ago, a tiny little 6lb. girl who looked like a baby bird entered the world. She was so tiny that she had to be fed with a little nursing tube and all of her baby clothes absolutely hung off her. As you can see, Phoebe is a year-old hunk of baby love, and no frail flower any longer.

We love our neighbor, Feebs! Happy birthday, sassy!

Our friends Courteney Coolidge and Todd Reamon welcomed their second son, Eli today! He's a relatively lightweight 9lbs. 3oz. (big brother Tennessee was 11lbs 3oz at birth) and as a result, Eli was wisely birthed by C-section. Mama, Daddy, and big brother are all doing well. Congrats!

It goes without saying that the chicks dig Finn (just look at some of the photos of him with his pals). But it doesn't hurt to advertise, (advertisement courtesy Auntie J).

This weekend, Finn and I got to take advantage of the great weather and see two of his favorite adult chicks. He and I went strolling through Golden Gate Park Saturday with Auntie Jenn, and today, hiking around Lafayette Reservoir with Auntie Leesh.

I'm only accepting the fact that they are moving because they have promised to come back for a visit in December. By then, Luna will be a big girl of nearly 9 months and able to bestow her baby wisdom on our own little Baby H. Until then... we'll miss you all!

Amy and Steve's wedding pics

Cute!
Originally uploaded by lisabagg.
So, it turns out that the one wedding that I'm stone-cold sober for is the wedding where I lose my camera. Not to mention, the wedding of my best friend. Especially heartbreaking, as I took *so* many photos at Amy and Steve's gorgeous wedding last June. I had fully planned to assemble a mini-site that would chronicle both the touching moments and the jiggy dancefloor moves, but unfortunately, in my oh-so pregnant state, I just have a selection of photos I've pulled from the photographer's site. You can see a slideshow here.

I'm posting these wedding pics here on our Babymania site since this is our baby's Auntie Aim and Uncle Steve we're talking about. These two are going to be playing vital roles in the little guy's life. From Auntie Aim, I will expect Baby H to learn the importance of birthdays being "all about him" and making sure he has iron-clad kick-butt plans lined up weeks in advance. From Uncle Steve, he will learn that Republicans can be intelligent, reasonable fellows, although I fully expect Baby H to register Democrat and convert Steve to at least Independent as soon as he is able.
